From The Author
As the author of Battle in the Pacific, my inspiration to take up the pen emerged from a profound encounter with the story of Taffy 3 and its extraordinary confrontation with the Japanese Center Force during World War II. About a decade ago, I stumbled upon this little-known narrative of immense valor, where a small and ostensibly outmatched group of American ships faced a formidable enemy fleet. This David versus Goliath battle struck a deep chord within me, as the themes of bravery, sacrifice, and tactical ingenuity unfolded in the historical accounts I perused.

As a Navy veteran myself, the selflessness of Commander Ernest E. Evans and his crew resonated with me on a personal level. Their unyielding courage in the face of overwhelming odds was not just a tale of military confrontation but a powerful testament to human spirit and sacrifice. This story lingered in my mind and heart, a narrative I believed deserved a broader audience than just historians or military enthusiasts. I felt a compelling duty to bring this saga to life—not merely as a dry recount of events but as a vivid narrative imbued with the emotions and heroism of those involved.
Prior to this, my literary endeavors were primarily focused on theology and spirituality, exploring the deeper meanings of faith and human existence. Venturing into historical fiction with Battle in the Pacific was a significant shift, driven by my conviction that the story of Taffy 3 needed to be told in a manner that highlighted not just the strategic and historical facts but the profound personal sacrifices and moral courage of its characters. My goal is to honor these men, to immortalize their legacy in a format that would engage and inspire future generations to appreciate the virtues essential to living a meaningful life and, if called upon, to face death with dignity.
Through this work, I aim to pay tribute to the valor of these sailors, presenting a narrative that, while filled with the tension and tactics of naval warfare, focuses more on the human elements—on the bravery, fear, and brotherhood that define such battles. It is their story, their sacrifice, that I sought to illuminate, providing a window into the soul of the past that might serve as a beacon for our present and future.
